You can see the list of upgradable packages with apt, but apt-get doesn’t have this option. Run 'apt list -upgradable' to see them.Īpt-get update doesn’t even tell you if any package can be upgraded. Hit:15 jammy InReleaseĦ packages can be upgraded. It tells you the number of packages that can be upgraded. However, apt update does one thing better than apt-get update. apt update vs apt-get updateīoth apt-get update and apt update do the same task of updating the local package cache so that your system is aware of the available package versions. Let me focus on the difference between the update and upgrade options of these commands. You can read this article to learn on the differences of apt and apt-get commands. apt is a newer and simpler version of apt-get. The apt-get command was the most popular of them all. There are many commands that interact with the APT package management apt-get, apt, dpkg, aptitude etc. apt or apt-get? Which one should you be using?ĭebian and Ubuntu use the APT package management system. Now that you understand how the combination update and upgrade works, let’s discuss the use of apt and apt-get. The sudo part lets you run commands as root in Ubuntu and Debian. And hence you use sudo with both commands. Since these are administrative commands, you need to run them as root. apt upgrade: upgrades packages to the new version.apt update: updates the package cache (to know which package versions can be installed or upgraded). To cancel the upgrade at this stage, you can press N. It shows the packages that are going to be upgraded and ask you to confirm by pressing enter (for default choice Y) or Y key. You can upgrade all the (upgradable) packages with sudo apt upgrade. Your local package cache has been updated and there are packages that can be upgraded. ![]() When you run the apt update or apt-get update command, it will fetch the updated metadata (package version etc.) on the packages. If you don’t update this database, the system won’t know if there are newer packages available or not. Note that this cache or database doesn’t contain the packages themselves, just the metadata (version, repository, dependency etc.) on the package. It will help you understand things even better.īasically, your system works on a database (cache) of available packages. I advise reading up on the concept of package manager. Still confused? Let me explain a bit more. ![]() ![]() It is the apt upgrade command that actually downloads and upgrades the package to the new version. ![]() It doesn’t download or install any package. The update command only gets the information about the latest version of packages available for your system. Though it sounds like running the apt update will give you the latest version of the package, it’s not true. Aren't the two the same thing? Difference between apt update and upgrade Let’s first discuss the difference between update and upgrade. Some older tutorial also mentions sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade.īoth apt and apt-get commands work pretty much the same except for some minor differences that I’ll discuss later in this tutorial. If you want to keep your Ubuntu system updated, you use the combination of sudo apt update and sudo apt upgrade commands.

![]() Many people, particularly in the West, doubt their own goodness. Sitting this close to you, Your Holiness, I have to say I’ve never seen anybody who is just about to turn eighty who looks so youthful and healthy. I have practiced that and I’ve found immense benefit to myself. ![]() You don’t need drugs or tranquilizers if you keep more affection in your heart. Therefore, the conclusion is that affection and concern for others’ well-being is the best way to achieve your own happy life, healthy body, and longer life. Fortunately, my mother was very, very compassionate, so I received maximum affection and benefit from her. If my mother had not been an affectionate person, then maybe I would be a different kind of person, suspicious and insecure. I often tell people that my first guru who taught me about compassion was my mother. Everybody experiences that, right from the beginning of life. There is no need for philosophy, no need for research. But if their parents show them a negative face, or punish them, they will be very unhappy. But when people have an artificial smile, I think it shows that inside they are a little bit distant from others.Ĭhildren who receive maximum affection from their parents and friends are usually very happy. If we examine people who easily show a genuine human smile, we see they experience more peace. So logically, all the negative things that are created by a self-centered attitude are reduced when you care for others. That attitude is the opposite of self-centered narrow-mindedness. Now let’s look at the other way-having a sense of concern for others’ well-being. You prefer distance from other people because you are self-centered and feel you are something very important. An extreme self-centered attitude is the opposite of that. An individual’s happy life depends on the rest of the community. ![]() Scientists say constant fear and anger do great damage to your immune system. This is very bad for your own peace of mind and for your health. Thinking only about yourself-having a very self-centered attitude-creates a lot of anxiety, loneliness, fear, and anger. The ultimate source of a happy mind and healthy body is your own mental attitude. It may appear you are more concerned about others’ well-being than your own, but in reality you get the maximum benefit. There is no conflict, because caring about others’ well-being is the best way to achieve your own happiness. How do you tell people that it is not selfish to be happy, and that they can care about-and benefit-both themselves and others? That conflict between our own happiness and other people’s doesn’t exist in Buddhism, which teaches that dharma practice simultaneously benefits both ourselves and others. They are told that the correct moral choice is to sacrifice their own happiness. Many people in the West have been taught that they have to choose between their own happiness and the well-being of others. Your Holiness, on behalf of myself and our readers, thank you for sharing your wisdom with us. I went inside for an hour of life-changing conversation. As they wept, the Dalai Lama expressed his love and concern for them. I witnessed too his deep connection with the Tibetan people, as he blessed a small group who had made the arduous journey from Tibet to meet their national and spiritual leader. Young and old, Tibetan, Indian, and Westerner, well-off and poor, he opened his heart to everyone, and they to him. ![]() He makes us feel it is possible.īefore our interview, I watched His Holiness greet people in the courtyard outside. He opens our hearts and touches our deepest longing for a life of happiness and affection. Why does the Dalai Lama touch so many people, not just those he meets personally but the hundreds of millions around the world who are inspired by his message of wisdom and kindness? I think it’s because he sees past all our differences and connects with the essence of who we are as human beings. As I write this many weeks later, the glow has not worn off. Spending an hour in his presence, talking about life, human nature, and Buddhism, was a life-changing experience. I think everyone who meets His Holiness the Dalai Lama comes away feeling they have been changed for the better. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama with Lion’s Roar editor-in-chief Melvin McLeod. Overall, the use of a high-tech human muzzle has the potential to revolutionize the way we interact with virtual reality cartoons. Some are designed for use with specific virtual reality systems, while others are more general-purpose and can be used with a wide range of devices. There are a number of different human muzzles available on the market, each with their own unique features and capabilities. This allows for a much more nuanced and expressive form of communication. ![]() However, with a human muzzle, users can easily convey their emotions by changing the volume and tone of their voice. With traditional forms of animation, it can be difficult to convey emotions and express oneself. This creates a sense of presence that is difficult to achieve with traditional forms of animation.Īnother advantage of using a human muzzle is the level of control it gives users. When you are shouting your head off at a virtual reality cartoon, you feel as though you are right there in the middle of the action. One of the biggest benefits of using a human muzzle is the level of immersion it provides. This allows users to communicate with animated characters in real-time, making the experience of interacting with them much more realistic and engaging. The concept of a human muzzle is simple: it is a device that is worn over the mouth and nose, and it captures the sound of the user's voice and translates it into the virtual world. ![]() One of the most popular ways to do this is through a high-tech human muzzle, which allows users to shout their heads off at virtual reality cartoons. Virtual reality technology has come a long way in recent years, and one of the most exciting new developments is the ability to interact with animated characters in a fully immersive environment. Some breeds, such as many sled dogs and Spitz types, have muzzles that somewhat resemble the original wolf's in size and shape, and others in the less extreme range have shortened it somewhat (mesocephalic) as in many hounds.Experience the Future of Animation Interaction: Shout Your Head Off at Virtual Reality Cartoons with High-Tech Human Muzzle The muzzle shape of a domestic dog ranges in shape depending upon the breed, from extremely long and thin (dolichocephalic), as in the Rough Collie, to nearly nonexistent because it is so flat (extreme brachycephalic), as in the pug. Other destinations of these nerves are the eyeballs, teeth and tongue. The muzzle is innervated by one of the twelve pairs of cranial nerves, which start in the brain and emerge through the skull to their target organs. The loose flaps of skin on the sides of the upper muzzle that hang to different lengths over the mouth are called ' flews'. In the domestic dog, most of the upper muzzle contains organs for detecting scents. The muzzle begins at the stop, just below the eyes, and includes the dog's nose and mouth. Great apes have reduced muzzles, with the exception being human beings, whose face does not have protruding jaws nor a snout but merely a human nose. Strepsirrhine primates have muzzles, as do baboons. Some animals, including ursines and great cats, have box-like snouts, while others, like shrews, have pointed snouts. Snouts are found on many mammals in a variety of shapes. ![]() The extended proboscis is called the "trunk" and is used for a wide range of purposes, including feeding, drinking, exploration, and social grooming. With a long historic purview, from classical Greece to modern times, the chapter argues for a different perspective on theatrical itinerancy and transnationality. When practised fully, metaphysical transnationality is a genuine mode of curiosity in the dialogue-with other nations, cultures, people, identities, customs, behaviours, and viewpoints. An alternative version to geographic transnationality is offered: the transnational mindset that places the intercultural dialogue at the forefront of the meaning making-not necessarily material, literal transnationality but metaphysical transnationality. Drawing on a range of dramaturgies, it argues for a historiographic approach that foregrounds the transnational and intercultural encounter, or metaphysical dialogue, that takes place in theatres of curiosity. This chapter reflects on the long history of cultural dialogues in theatre, summed up in the concept of transnationality. |
